DENT B313H GENERAL PATHOLOGY I
Pathology literally means the study (logos) of suffering (pathos). It is a discipline that bridges the gap between basic sciences and clinical practice. Pathology includes the investigation of the causes (etiology) as well as underlying mechanisms (pathogenesis) that results in clinical symptoms and signs of diseases. Pathologists identify the changes in the gross and microscopic appearance (morphology) of cells and tissues as well as alteration in body fluids, coupled with a multitude of biochemical, molecular, microbiological and immunological techniques to be able to reach a conclusive diagnosis and to understand the underlying mechanisms. The course includes two main parts, in its first part which is General Pathology the student is introduced to the fundamental cellular and tissue responses to pathologic stimuli; while the second part which is Systemic Pathology focuses on the responses of particular specialized organs. For the Dentistry certain organ systems were chosen that maybe relevant to the practice.
