ECiv B111C Physics for Engineers

This course introduces fundamental concepts and analytical techniques in engineering mechanics, focusing on:

  • Equilibrium of a rigid body – Equilibrium in 2D and Free Body Diagram (FBD).
  • Friction – Dry Friction: Explore static and kinetic friction, analyzing its effects on mechanical systems like wedges, screws, and belts.
  • Truss – Method of Joints: Analyze truss structures, applying equilibrium equations at joints to determine forces and identify tension or compression.
  • Truss – Method of Sections: Use the method of sections to efficiently calculate internal forces in specific members by analyzing critical sections.
  • Frame and Machine Analysis: Study forces and reactions in frames and machine s, distinguishing between stationary and moving systems.
  • Centroid: Determine centroids of shapes and composite bodies and apply them in structural design and bending stress analysis.
  • Moment of Inertia: Understand and calculate the moment of inertia for various shapes to assess resistance to bending and rotation.
  • This course provides essential problem-solving skills for real-world engineering applications.

ECiv B112C Calculus I

The aim of this course is to provide the first year student of the BSc. In Civil Engineering program with the necessary mathematical tools to solve analytical problems and adequately complete design tasks. Mathematic course aims to develop the generic skills using material relevant to the study of Engineering Mathematics. One of the desired skills of Engineers is the ability to solve Integration of functions. And provides skills in areas with volumes that are immediately applicable to practical problems. Examples are included from engineering applications that show the relevance of the course materials and reinforce the use of advanced mathematical techniques in mechanical and electrical engineering together with applications. The prescribed course will enable students to become familiar with the mathematical tools required to solve these and similar engineering related problems. The mathematical skills derived from this course form a necessary base to analytical and design concepts encountered in the program. The course covers many of the mathematical topics that will be used for a number of courses in later years of their Program.

ECiv B113H Engineering Geology

Engineering Geology is a dynamic and essential field of study that bridges the gap between geology and civil engineering. This course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of geological principles and their practical application in the context of civil engineering projects. Whether it is assessing the stability of a construction site, evaluating the risks of geological hazards, or optimizing resource utilization, engineering geologists play a critical role in ensuring the success and safety of infrastructure development.

ECiv B114L Engineering Drawing

Engineering Drawing is a foundational course for first-year Civil Engineering students. It introduces the principles of technical drawing and graphical communication used in civil engineering practice. Students learn freehand sketching and the use of basic geometry instruments to create accurate drawings. The course covers applied geometry, scales, orthographic projection, multiview drawings, isometric drawings, dimensioning, and sectional views.

In addition, students are introduced to Computer-Aided Design (CAD) using AutoCAD, enabling them to produce professional engineering drawings digitally.

ECiv B115C English Language I

This course is a Pre-intermediate level of English language. It is a multi-layered, topic-based syllabus which includes thorough and comprehensive work on grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and the skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing. It helps the first-year students at the non-English departments to learn how to communicate in English, produce various types of writings including the formal and informal, have effective listening and reading comprehension skills.  It motivates students with units based around up-to-date, globally relevant topics which help them gather information about the world and other cultures through the medium of English. Moreover, it helps them enhance their English skills further as it offers new perspectives to the studying and learning of language. These new perspectives provoke critical thinking, entrepreneurship, active engagement, and finally learning the language with desire rather than as an obligation. It supports students discover English in the context of the modern world.
